Master your health and fitness with these key habits, including healthy eating, proper hydration, plenty of sleep, and good exercise!
Hello, health and fitness enthusiasts!
When I say enthusiasts, I don’t just mean people who clock hours at the gym throughout the week. If you are actively trying to live healthier, this is for you.
After all, who doesn’t want to flaunt that slim-fit polo or the beautiful prom gown without worrying about the tummy tiers making an appearance? With the festive season just around the corner, there’s no better time than autumn to do just that.
The good news is that we won't ask you to starve yourself. Nope!
All you need are little lifestyle changes here and there and you'll be healthier and fitter by next summer. Even if you aren’t big on fitness and working out, these lifestyle changes will significantly improve your physical and mental health. You will have more energy, feel better, and be in a better mood throughout the week.
Here are 5 essential habits to help you master your health and fitness!
1. Eat Well for Better Health and Fitness
Yep, you read that right. Reducing your food intake sounds like a good idea, but it isn't that good for you. Eating well is the new fitness mantra. The secret lies in eating healthy, balanced meals. Start your day early with a full, high-protein, high-calcium breakfast. This is the best time to give your body all the energy boosters you need to power through the day.
Your breakfast should have a balanced assortment of dairy, eggs, and vitamins. You can also add a little carbs and good fats into the mix. Breakfast meal preps are usually a chore for many people, but this is your most important meal. So, consider eggs and fruits your best friends!
Plant based meals and vegan food are a bit healthier for lunch and dinner since they are easier to digest. Your stomach gets through them faster, then slowly starts breaking down all the fat it's stored over the years. There's a lot more science behind this, but it works.
Another thing you should do is break your meals into smaller portions and take five to six smaller meals at regular intervals. This improves your metabolism and gives you the energy you need to function throughout the day. Embrace healthy snacking!
If this meal plan is giving you food prep anxiety, don't worry. You can sign up for ready made food delivery services like Diet 2 Go that deliver healthy, pre-made meals at your doorstep.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
The importance of staying hydrated cannot be emphasized enough.
If you have water when your throat starts feeling dry, you are likely already dehydrated. Your body can still be dehydrated without you feeling thirsty. Over 70% of your cellular composition consists of water. Our bodies need a lot of it to keep our organs functioning properly. We recommend a minimum of 2 litres of water a day.
Your body's actual needs might be higher depending on your physical activity level, the medication you might be taking, and your food, caffeine, and alcohol consumption throughout the day. Keep a nice reusable water bottle handy. They are in fashion nowadays, so that's a plus too.
3. Move Those Muscles
If you’re already motivated, start working out and get those muscles moving. Look up strength and core training gyms near your home so that you can walk there and get a bit extra out of it. If gyms are too much for you to handle, you can also walk or run around 30 minutes a day for cardio.
Cycling is also a great way to stay healthier, and you can save a few quid on fuel. Use the stairs whenever you can instead of the lift. You can also look up exercises you can do at home on YouTube and work out in your living room. Just keep those muscles moving.
4. Take Your ZZZ Seriously
Stop scrolling through your phone while you’re lying in bed! That scrolling is affecting your mental and physical health. "Early to bed, early to rise" actually works. You feel better, healthier, and have more energy throughout the day if you sleep properly.
When you sleep, your brain takes that time to process the energy from the food you've had during the day. You literally burn calories as you sleep!
Poor sleeping habits lead to bad mental health and physical fitness. Even your work productivity is lower because you don't have the same energy levels or clarity throughout the day. Get to bed early, and put your gadgets away as soon as you lie down. Pamper yourself with a comfy mattress and pillow, and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
5. Cut Back on Caffeine
Yeah, this is easier said than done because caffeine helps us power through the day. Unfortunately, it also kills our metabolism very quickly. Cut down your caffeine intake and you'll automatically see a drastic improvement in your overall health and fitness. Instead of going cold turkey though, slowly wean yourself off by switching to decaf coffee and slowly rooting out all your favourite sources of caffeine.
Oh, and steer clear of energy drinks. They are nasty beyond measure. Consuming them regularly can give you high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, and insomnia.
While it might be hard when you first start, embracing a healthier lifestyle will change your life for the better. You'll find it easier to fall asleep, and you'll always wake up fresh and well-rested. You'll actually look forward to waking up early every morning, and you'll be happier once your body starts feeling better.
Good Luck!
